Plot Seed: King vs Church?

So unfortunately we had to cancel the game this week due to low turnout so I don’t have an awesome story to tell you about how I grew and learned new things as a new DM. However my dear friend and Twitch streamer/YouTuber Evil Squeegee did post an interesting plot seed on his Twitter account and I thought I would take a crack at my interpretation of it.

In the Kingdom of Avallore there has been much distrust thrust unto the Church of the Sun as of late. After Father Huston was revealed to be a necromancer in disguise, His Royal Highness King Richard VIII finally outlawed worship of the Sun God. In truth the King had been planning this move for months now. He claimed that arcane magic and alchemical science were the future, and that the archaic ways of the Church were holding the kingdom back from true progress. This was, of course, all a ruse.

You see, King Richard was secretly a very religious man though not quite how you would expect. He did not only worship the Moon Goddess, he was in love with her and hoped that outlawing Sun worship in his kingdom would encourage the common folk to worship the moon instead and please his mistress. It worked, so pleased was she that she lay with him that night, and the next year, begot him a daughter.

King Richard was distraught and was forced to send his demi-god child far away as to save his marriage and not provoke a negative reaction from the people. Only interesting the information of her existence with the captain of his personal guard, and the monk who would take care of her. If the church knew what had happened they could certainly turn the people against him. King Richard’s problems were not over however as the next day the Church, which still functioned despite his decree, made a declaration of their own banning users of arcane magic from their congregation in retaliation. King Richard was outraged by this but he was tired, and decided to simply let it go in hopes that it would only deter more people from that dreadful place.

Ten years later King Richard decided he would take a simple stroll through the castle city without his personal guard. “It should be safe enough” he thought. This would prove to be his undoing. While walking the streets King Richard was attacked by several Sun God fanatics, was stabbed 23 times, and ultimately died.

Ronald Silverfang; Captain of the Royal Guard, wasted no time in making preparations. The King had no heir by his Queen, meaning his only living child was the demi-god. With great haste he gathered a party of well renown adventurers, they would be the ones to retrieve the girl. Ronald had to stay at the castle and maintain order and stall potential usurpers until the heir could be brought to sit upon the throne.

Can the heroes find the girl and bring her safely back to the castle before the kingdom falls into Sun worshipper hands? That, my dear friends, is up to you.

Thank you all so much for reading, I’m sorry that this week’s blog is so much shorter than last week’s and it’s definitely shorter than I’d like but I would rather have a short solid post than one with way too much padding or just none at all. If you have any suggestions for future fill-in blogs (because I doubt this is the last time I’ll have to do this) or any questions at all feel free to tweet me on Twitter or email me at anothernewdmblog@gmail.com. Special thanks to Evil Squeegee for the general concept, and to my lovely boyfriend SizTBC for the part about the king worshiping another god. Also to TheCarpeDM for not suing me over using the name Avallore. Thanks again for reading and I’ll see you all next week.
